    Octagon Room

    The Castle’s Hub

    The Octagon room was designed as the Castle’s hub. The doors, mostly with marble surrounds, lead to the Great Hall, the dining Room, the South Porch, the Drawing Room and the Ante-Library.

    The walls were originally live with 18th century ornate rococo panelling. These were high-class Louis XV boiseries (panels of carved wood) and came from one of several complete interiors that Lord Stuart bought in France. These were fitted into the rooms at the Castle by skilled French craftsmen.

    Marble doesn’t burn!

    The carved marble heraldic shields above the doors are the only elements in the Octagon Room to survive the fire, and not be stolen in the 20 years that the castle was left abandoned.
