Volunteer with us

Join our team of dedicated volunteers and you’ll be part of a large, friendly team who share a passion for Highcliffe Castle. Learn new skills, add valuable experience to your CV and make new friends. So whether you want to pursue a career in heritage, or just want to meet new people and indulge your passion, we want to hear from you.

From spring next year we will be entering a new and exciting phase of the castle’s history as we open the newly refurbished east wing. With exhibitions as well as archive and reading room, we need enthusiastic volunteers to join our team as room guides and to welcome our visitors.

Ways to Volunteer

Welcome our visitors

As a Visitor Reception volunteer, you’ll be the first point of contact for visitors coming into the Castle. You’ll give each visitor a warm and friendly welcome, as well as letting them know how to make the most out of their visit.

Our Visitor Reception is a busy place where you’ll be processing admission tickets, selling guided tours and items from our shop as well as helping orientate our visitors.

These volunteers are multi-tasking superstars who can brighten up even the rainiest day!

“I love volunteering at Highcliffe Castle. Post-retirement, this is a very enjoyable way to keep an active mind and maintain an interest outside home.  Working at the Castle provides an opportunity to meet and interact with many different people – other volunteers, staff, visitors and customers – in a friendly environment where the contribution of volunteers is recognised and valued as essential.

There’s always something going on and now is an especially exciting time to be working here, with the Heritage Lottery Fund restoration project due for completion early next year.”

Tell our stories

After the devastating fires in the 1960’s the castle was left a shell and although it has been restored, much of the contents were lost or bought by interested parties.

Our tour guides and room stewards have a passion for history and talking to groups of visitors to bring the castle’s interesting past to life.

I enjoy volunteering as a Tour Guide because I love finding out interesting and unusual stories about the families who lived in the Castle, and sharing those with our visitors, so that they will find the history of Highcliffe as fascinating as I do!”

Delve into our archives

Although much of our collection is now owned by the V&A museum, we still have many of the original decorations from the castle as well as our paper archive. In Spring 2019 the castle will have bespoke archive and reading rooms but the work is already underway to identify and catalogue our collection.

Our team of archive volunteers have an eye for detail and have a passion for research.

Tending the grounds

First inspired by the work of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the grounds and estate at Highcliffe Castle have seen many changes through the centuries but still retains some of Capability Brown’s original alterations.

The castle sits in 14 acres of land from the manicured Parterre by the Wintergarden to woodland connecting up to Steamer Point Nature Reserve.

Our active garden volunteers love being out in the elements and help keep the grounds looking at their best throughout the year, come rain or shine.

Assist with our events and weddings

Highcliffe Castle holds as many as 150 weddings each year and holds a well-deserved reputation for being one of the most prestigious wedding venues on the south coast.

Our wedding ceremony stewards ensure the safety and comfort of the wedding guests and assist in the running of the wedding ceremony, from Groom’s arrival to guest departure.

Every year we have a fun-packed events programme from classic car showcases to family trails and open-air theatre. Our volunteers help greet our visitors with a warm welcome, check tickets and help steward the events.
